The Pentagram Spread of Love
The five pointed star is an ancient symbol, used in a number of ancient and modern traditions with many layers of meaning. Amongst these, Pythagorus determined it to represent the figure of man, the five elements; earth, air, fire, water and spirit or soul and it also represents the path of Venus during her travels. The suit of coins is also called pentacles which is another name for the pentagram.
Here is a simple spread, using the pentagram and its connection with the Goddess of Love, Venus, to help identify areas of self development and understanding with the cards. It can be profoundly meaningful.
Shuffle the cards and choose five, one at a time and lay them face down in the shape of a five pointed star. Start the reading by turning over the first card – beginning at the point on the right. Proceed anti clockwise – the last card being the point at the top of the star.
The first card represents Love of your self and your card will shed insight into what you need to develop this. Does the card suggest you look back too much in the past and feel the present you isn’t as good as you were once? Or does it suggest you seek others’ approval too much? You may wish to choose a second card to see what you can do to improve your self esteem.
The second card represents Love of Life. How well do you love life itself? Is it a joy to be experienced and shared with others? Is it something you lock up inside? Is it something that depends on the material world? Checking what suit (if minor arcana card comes up) will shed light on what you need to encourage to enjoy your life more – be it more thoughtfulness and consideration(swords), more compassion and feeling (cups), more energy and determination (wands) or more common sense (coins)!
The third card represents Love of Others. How well do you care about other people? Your friends, your family, your work colleagues, mankind? Your card might not answer all these questions, (although you could choose a card for each of them to shed light on how well you respond to others around you) but it will hopefully clarify what might be preventing you from loving well. It might be a judgemental attitude, or maybe you are too impulsive, or have unreasonable expectations or maybe you need to show a little more understanding and compassion. Take time to reflect on the card’s significance in your life.
The fourth card represents Love of Truth. How honest are you with yourself, with others, with your opinions, comments and judgements? How well do you question opinions you make in your heart? The answer may well shed light on how well you think you know yourself. Cards that show a person blindfolded or shielding their eyes might indicate that this is an uncomfortable answer for you and choosing a second card to show how you can open your eyes, your heart and mind to being more honest might be of value to you. Honesty is paramount when reading for yourself or those you know yet may be difficult for some.
The last card, the fifth card, represents Love of the Divine and shows how connected you are to source. Is it far away for you or your closest ally? Is it something you are familiar with or something you don’t believe in? Remember, no one is judging you, but the answer may be insightful and if you would like to become closer to your connection with whatever you perceive the divine source to be, a second card may shed light as to how to do that.
At the close of the spread, add up all the numbers of the cards (ie 6 of wands, 2 for the High Priestess etc) and then add those two together – if you have 12 – the number is 3 and so on (22 and 11 are not added and remain the same). This final number represents a major arcana card which will demonstrate your main lesson in love at the present time.
If you have love in your heart and feel the depth, the delight and the absolute wonder of it, for you, life will always be special, always be a treasure and the world will be transformed for ever
