An Introduction to the Zodiac Signs
Aries 21st March to 20th April
Aries is ruled by fire and the planet Mars. This indicates a fiery, outgoing nature, quick to rise to argument yet just as quick to forgive. Aries are willing to fight for what they believe in but can be gentle and kind hearted underneath. They are generally not known for their tact and diplomacy!
Aries often need a mission in life. After all, Aries is named after the God of War! This doesn’t necessarily mean that those born under the sign of Aries are violent or militaristic people, but it does mean that they tackle projects as if they are tackling a mission or a battle plan. Arians do everything with a passion, whether it is their approach to work or how they follow a favourite pastime.
Taurus 21st April – 21st May
Taureans are like the sign of the bull, steadfast, dependable, loyal and often, immovable. Security is their byword. It is important for Taureans to feel safe, and secure in their own environment and they will do anything to protect that. They are a strong-willed people, stubborn in the extreme and great lovers of beauty in all its forms.
Taureans are determined and fixed in their viewpoint, this can lead to problems, as they are not willing to adapt. Their intransigence will often mean they will lose out on opportunities to change their lifestyle, but more importantly, to see other people’s points of view.
Gemini 22nd May – 21st June
Gemini people have a constant need to communicate and it is a sign full of contradictions. When we talk about Gemini as a sign, we see the image of the twins, Castor and Pollux. Although they may look identical, their characters are different and Gemini is very prone to changing their characteristics. It would be unfair to say they have a split personality; it is more of a case of having an interest in a wide variety of subjects and being able to switch easily from one way of thinking and acting to another.
Gemini people are very lively and versatile but can be changeable. They can approach life in different ways at times, depending on their mood. There is a constant need for stimulation, as they easily get bored and want to move on to something different.
Cancer 22nd June – 23rd July
Cancer is the sign of the crab and when under attack, a typical Cancerian will scuttle away to some corner. Once in that corner however, Cancerians will defend themselves to the utmost and equally defend those around them, especially their family. Cancerians will often try projecting a much harder image on the outside than they are on the inside – another form of self-protection.
Cancerian emotions tend to run deep and they often have a strong intuition or psychic ability. They are occasionally over sensitive and can be over protective, sometimes smothering other people. Cancerians tend to be a bit of a glutton for any sob story that someone else may give them but are always prepared to lend a sympathetic shoulder, ear or bowl of soup to those who need it!
Leo 24th July – 23rd August
Leo is the traditional leader of the Zodiac, the sign of leadership and Kingdom. The Lion, the traditional ruler of the jungle animals represents Leo. Like all fire signs, which include Aries and Sagittarius, they are confident and outgoing people who are very good at believing in themselves and looking on the bright side when life seems to be going against them.
Leo symbolises pride, authority and leadership. In fact, many politicians have Leo prominent in their birth charts. They like to be in charge of everything and crave recognition. They don’t like to play second fiddle to anyone, so are often out in front organising things.
Virgo 24th August – 23rd September
Virgo is represented by the image of a corn maiden, representing youth and the promise of harvest; those born under this sign can be fairly shy and reticent as well as hard-working. They are the perfectionists of the zodiac, often too pedantic at times for other people, constantly sorting out the layout of the room, always tidying the place up.
Their fastidiousness extends to life in general as Virgos can be prone to be intransigent and inflexible in many ways and can worry and fret a great deal. Virgos will always appear tidy and well groomed and are among the most loyal and dependable friends you could ever wish to meet.
Libra 24th September – 23rd October
Libra is the sign of the scales and they like to balance and weigh things up in their mind which make them ideal counsellors and mediators. They like to enjoy life to the full and are generally easy-going, wanting to get on with everyone. Librans are the born diplomats; they hate arguments and are often prepared to step in and help the underdog. Relationships and friendships are very important to them.
Librans can be quite indecisive at times, often with trivial matters. They enjoy the company of others and they prefer to interact with others rather than doing things on their own which can make them a bit of a party animal.
Scorpio 24th October – 22nd November
Scorpio is the most intense sign of the zodiac with a natural inclination to be secretive. Those born under the sign of Scorpio can be very complex; both calm on the outside and passionate within. Scorpios have a quick, sharp mind and strong instinctual feeling, but they have to be careful, as Scorpios with that sting in their tail, are known to have a sharp tongue. Occasionally, they will say something at the wrong moment and appear too blunt.
Scorpio has a strong sense of understanding and sympathy for other people and are willing to listen to their problems and help sort them out but woe betide anyone that lets them down because they don’t easily forgive and certainly never forget.
Sagittarius 23rd November – 21st December
Sagittarius is the sign of the archer and Sagittarians have a strong instinctual fighting ability and will fight for their ideals and other people’s ideals. There is a constant need for Sagittarians to find new challenges and new energy. They dislike being tied down and often fight against being pushed into a corner. Sagittarians have an inventive mind and are constantly looking for new things to do. It is just a case of finding that direction.
Sagittarians are very good judges of character in situations and are able to make snap decisions, particularly when they involve other people. They find it harder to deal with their own problems in such an easy manner. Sagittarians will also have a strong interest in philosophy and cultures of different people and places, often loving to travel to a wide variety of places.
Capricorn 22nd December – 20th January
Capricorns will battle through on anything. They won’t stop until they reach the top and have a very strong drive. The Capricorn symbol is the goat and this shows them as someone who is responsible and understanding, but never letting the emotional side block their more practical side. They have a strong sense of discipline, in fact, if there are no boundaries to their life, they can feel very insecure. Capricorns need to be involved in organisations and occasionally, they can be too inward looking.
Capricorns are never more determined then when they feel something is in their way. In fact they thrive on pushing out their own boundaries. They do this with sheer effort and hard work but will make sure they achieve their aims.
Aquarius 21st January – 19th February
Aquarians are the free spirits of the zodiac signs, always ahead of their time in ideas and thoughts. . Aquarians are unconventional and rebellious, always wanting to venture into new things and new ideas. They are constantly searching for change in their lives.
Aquarians can occasionally appear aloof to some people even though they enjoy mixing and meeting new people. This is because they tend to be objective with issues rather than emotive, seeing the bigger picture rather than the one right in front of them – their clarity can often be unnerving to some. Aquarians can change their lifestyle to suit the circumstances around them. They are very good at encouraging people to make the best of their lives. Aquarians often want to get involved in new causes and have a very inventive mind as well.
Pisces 20th February – 20th March
This is the mystical sign and people born under this sign are deep thinkers with a strong intuition and sensitivity. They are born romantics and tend to see life through rosy-coloured spectacles. Pisceans are optimists, dreamers and can be quite sensitive. They can also be indecisive and are easily led by others.
Pisceans will often tend to fight against their own ideas, the one part looking for security and practical issues, the other part with a romantic dream. It is the security versus the romantic side, often confusing themselves, as well as those people around them.
